Frequently Asked Questions

What are Whole Plant Perfumes?

Whole Plant Perfumes are created Seed To Perfume. My family and I organically grow perfume flowers and botanicals here in our woodland perfume garden, and wildcraft from our pristine forest. I use ancient and traditional perfume extraction methods and techniques like enfleurage, organic food grade alcohol extraction, and distillation to create my own organic absolutes, tinctures, enfleurage extraits, enfleurage pomades, resinoids, waxes, and essential oils. Perfume descriptions list which handcrafted extracts are used in the creation of the perfume.

What is Perfumed Honey?

Perfumed Honey is organic, raw honey harvested from our honey bee hives, infused with botanicals in a special two step process that ensures lovely scent and flavor are delicately laced through the beautiful honey.

What is Enfleurage?

Enfleurage is an ancient technique, first used by the Ancient Egyptians to extract the scent of lotus and lily. The process was then refined and revived by traditional perfumers in the 18th century. First a base of fat is created, traditionally animal tallow was used, but I use exotic, organic plant butters, stiffened with beeswax from our organic honey bee apiary. After the base is melted, poured onto trays, and hardens, freshly picked, just opened flowers are laid upon the base. The blossoms exude their lovely fragrance onto the base, which absorbs the scent of the living flower. Each of my enfleurages have hundreds of blooms grace their surface over the course of charging the enfleurage. The spent flowers are removed daily and replaced with fresh flowers. This continues over the course of the season, until the pomade is saturated and imprinted with the scent of the fresh flowers. I extract some of my enfleurage pomades to obtain a pure extrait absolute for use in my liquid oil perfumes. Some enfleurages are kept whole for use in my solid perfumes. Enfleurage is a beautiful process that I enjoy very much. The final enfleurages and extraits capture the whole scent of the flower, all of it's many nuances and notes, and is like smelling the fresh flower!

How do you create whole plant perfume materials?

I extract flowers and botanicals with high proof, food grade, organic ethanol/alcohol. When the extrait is saturated with the fragrance of the flowers or botanicals I'm extracting, it is then processed to obtain a whole plant absolute. The alcohol is completely evaporated, and I'm left with a pure extract of the plant or flower. I never use hexane or toxic extraction methods. My perfume materials are created organically every step of the way. From the materials used to create the extracts, to the flowers and botanicals that are grown organically here on our Forest Flower Farm.

Is there anything else I should know about your perfumes?

Yes! Jade Forest Perfumes are organic and created from botanicals, therefore the longevity is not the same as mainstream, synthetic, and commercial perfumes. I recommend applying a bit of perfume to each pulse point, gently with your fingertips or rollerball. Rubbing causes faster evaporation, so avoiding it can extend the longevity of the fragrance.

My perfumes are best experienced on the skin, rather than sampling from the bottle or jar. As they are warmed by the heat of your body, the perfume unfolds its scent song, and the many notes and accords are experienced in layers, a top, middle, and finally the base notes in the dry down.

A characteristic of organic, natural oil perfumes is settling of heavier molecules like plant waxes and resins. It is completely normal to see a tiny amount of sediment at the bottom of the bottle, especially if it has been sitting in one spot for a while, and in no way does it effect the perfume.

A characteristic of natural, organic solid enfleurage perfumes is crystallization of the raw, organic beeswax and plant butters used in the enfleurage, and the solid compositions and formulas. Over time the beeswax can also bloom, which is a harmless, edible type of wild yeast that is also found on chocolate. Neither are common, but can happen if the solid perfume is subjected to temperature fluctuations, or just over time in general. It in no way effects the perfume and is strictly cosmetic.
